Sandy Lockwood
After attending night classes I got a job as a studio assistant. In 1980 I completed the ceramics course at the National Art School in Sydney. I later went on to do a master’s degree and a Ph D.
After Art School I set up a studio in the countryside and built my first of many wood kilns. I also have a small gas kiln and a solar powered electric kiln.
I have been making woodfired and saltglazed functional and sculptural work there since 1980. I design and make my own clays and slips and glazes. My teaching career has spanned 45 years and includes technical colleges, workshops in Australia and overseas and for twenty five years I was a part time lecturer at the National Art School. I also run short courses in my studio on wheel throwing and woodfiring.
I exhibit in Australia and internationally. For more details you can check out my website.
I look forward to mentoring in the Cohorts.Art program. It’s a privilege to accompany participants on their journey of discovery and learning, and to witness their development.
My approach is akin to coaching. I start where participants are, and work to develop creativity, problem-solving and risk-taking toward building a strong articulate practice.
My main priority is to help students find a path of development and to find their own ceramic ‘voice.’
I think group and individual sessions will be very fruitful in helping participants articulate their ideas and develop ways to describe their visual vocabulary.
Some things I hope will happen are: The group becomes a supportive sounding board for ideas and challenges faced; participants seek out information and research in their particular area of ceramics; participants ‘brainstorm make’ and try new things, go down some unknown paths and not be so concerned with the end goal but take a journey to see what it can offer.
I hope participation in Clay Cohorts will lay a foundation for the ongoing development of each participant.
Individual Meetings, 1st & 3rd Thursdays; Group Meetings, Last Sundays.
Workshop Agenda: My in-person workshop Workshop Dates TBD (possibly late August / early September 2025). It may be a wood firing workshop, or a making workshop, and/or a combination, at my studio in Balmoral Village, Australia
