Sam Harvey

Sam Harvey is a ceramic artist, curator, and educator based in Aspen, CO. He received his MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. Sam has garnered recognition as one of the most compelling artists in the United States, receiving the prestigious 2019 USA Fellowship Award. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and showcased in renowned institutions like the American Museum of Ceramic Art and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Sam's passion for ceramics extends beyond his artistic practice. He has served as the studio coordinator of the ceramics department at Anderson Ranch Arts Center for nine years, fostering creativity and guiding emerging artists. Additionally, he actively contributes to the ceramic arts community by serving on the boards of the Carbondale Clay Center and the Archie Bray Foundation. As the owner and director of the Harvey Preston Gallery, specializing in contemporary ceramic art, Sam actively promotes inclusivity and artistic expression. Sam's extensive travels around the world, including visits to China, Nepal, Italy, and England, have enriched his artistic perspective and continue to infuse his work with diverse influences.

As an experienced educator, I share my knowledge and enthusiasm for ceramics at universities, community centers, and art centers worldwide. My teaching style emphasizes and encourages students to explore their artistic voices and embrace the limitless possibilities of ceramics. I eagerly anticipate working with the new cohort, building community, inspiring passion, and fostering artistic growth. I look forward to an inspirational and transformative learning experience wherein we all embrace our creative potential and explore the boundaries of our creative journeys!

The group's in person work session will take place in Santa Fe, NM. Given Santa Fe’s long history as an art mecca, I would really like to set up visits to a number of museums and galleries in the area. There is also the possibility of scheduling studio visits with artists living in the Santa Fe area, as well. Please note: Ralph Scala’s ceramic studio is a fully functional facility, with the capacity for creating both wheel thrown and sculptural objects. The studio also features a number of kilns; ranging from ‘electric’ kilns to gas kilns; and wood and soda.
